Naperville Cosmetic Dentist Discusses Replacement Options for Missing Teeth

Naperville cosmetic dentist on implants and other tooth replacement options

Naperville implant dentist David Newkirk, DDS lists some of the most sought-after options to replace missing teeth and restore oral function.

Naperville, IL – According to Dr. David Newkirk – a Naperville cosmetic dentist with nearly three decades in practice – missing teeth are a widespread problem in the United States. “Even a single missing tooth can adversely affect both oral function and the appearance of the smile,” he states, noting that most patients lose teeth to issues including decay, gum disease, trauma, and injury. “Consequences of missing teeth can range from difficulties in eating and speaking to more serious complications, such as gum recession, bone loss, and even facial collapse.”

Dr. Newkirk urges patients with missing teeth to realize that several potential solutions exist for this common concern. Advances in modern dentistry, he explains, have made tooth replacement options more effective, affordable, and aesthetically pleasing than ever before. Below, he outlines the most popular tooth replacement options available at his Naperville practice.

For patients missing a single tooth, Dr. Newkirk typically recommends dental implants. Constructed of a titanium “root” topped by a custom-built dental crown, implants serve to emulate the natural tooth in structure and appearance. As such, they can enable a patient to chew, speak, and perform other everyday activities without complication. According to Dr. Newkirk, high-quality implants are sturdy, lifelike, and extremely versatile, and can remain in place for years when properly maintained.

For those who are missing entire rows of teeth, implant-supported dentures can be an excellent option, Dr. Newkirk continues. “Implant-supported dentures offer a number of benefits not applicable to removable dentures,” he explains. “They can preserve chewing efficiency, prevent gum irritation, and provide a more secure fit without the need for adhesives.” Implant-supported dentures consist of a customized prosthetic that is anchored to the jaw with methodically-placed implants. Like single-tooth implants, these innovative dentures are known to look and feel similar to natural teeth, says Dr. Newkirk.

In some cases, patients may be better candidates for dental bridges to replace their missing teeth, Dr. Newkirk continues. These restorations consist of a false tooth (or “pontic”) connected by two dental crowns. While bridges are generally regarded as a more affordable and less invasive option than implants, Dr. Newkirk states that they typically require preparation of the adjacent teeth that are otherwise healthy. Ultimately, he says, the right replacement will depend on each patient’s unique case.

Furthermore, he encourages patients who need to replace missing teeth to take their medical needs, cosmetic preferences, and budget into account. “A good dentist will offer many effective methods for tooth replacement,” says Dr. Newkirk, “and patients should never hesitate to ask thorough questions before making a decision.”
